"Goldwidows focuses on four Basotho women of Lesotho, a country within South Africa that is economically dependent on South African industry. Although most Basotho men, and often up to 60% at one time, have worked as migrant laborers in South Africa's gold mines, apartheid laws forbid these women and their children to enter South Africa. They live as practical widows, three in a remote mountain village, while the fourth has moved to the capital, Maseru, to look for work.
