In 1777, as the War of Independence escalated, tactics on both sides changed dramatically. Colonists in upstate New York found themselves the targets of attacks from Native Americans who were essentially working as mercenaries for the British. Ordered to create chaos, kill militia and scalp colonists, they spread fear and discord. One of their apparent victims was Jane McRea, the fiancé of a British loyalist. Jane was abducted in a raid, and most felt that she was scalped by her Indian captors. But some believe that she was accidentally shot by the colonial militia which was trying to save her. Hunting for clues, forensic anthropologists open her grave and find two sets of bones--but no skull! Aided by DNA analysis, computer facial reconstruction, and historical research, scientists try to resolve questions about her death and the mysteries uncovered in her grave.
