Manuscript map drawn with pencil, black and red ink. Shows track of Hayes in red ink.
Relief shown by hachures.
The manuscript maps associated with Hayes's expedition complement a number of early photographs of Greenland, also from the Hayes expedition, which are in the AGS Library. Hayes served as surgeon on Elisha Kent Kane's Second Grinnell Expedition, an account of which was published as An Arctic boat-journey, in the autumn of 1854 (Hayes 1860). Hayes led another expedition north on the eve of the American Civil War. He tells the story of this expedition in The land of desolation (Hayes 1871) and The open polar sea (Hayes 1885).
