The United States Sentencing Commission, an independent agency in the judicial branch of the Federal government that was organized in 1985, develops national sentencing policy and sentencing guidelines for the federal courts. The Commission's objective is "to ensure that similar offenders who commit similar offenses receive similar sentences." Its guidelines manuals, sourcebooks, case law compilations and analyses, sentencing statistics and data reports, and impact assessments inform members of all branches of Federal government, criminal justice practitioners, academicians, and the general public.
