Following a two day trial of interactive software and handheld computers at Saltash.net Community School in Cornwall, Professor Richard Kimbell and Senior Research fellow Tony Wheeler of Goldsmiths College lead a discussion about the effectiveness of handheld technology and software in enhancing pupil learning and assessment. Richard and his team are piloting the project in 20 schools from September 2006, ready to report to the DfES and QCA by January 2007. The discussion also reflects on the challenge of using new technology to enhance learning in classrooms rather than allowing the technology to take over. The discussion is useful for schools wanting to think more carefully about the best way to invest in new technology. Should they continue going for large expensive PCs or should they be thinking about something smaller and more personalized?
