520    $aThe Spanish settlers of the American Southwest brought more than horses, conquistadors, and the missions--they carried their culture, which included a fondness for theater, drama, and plays. This film examines how many of these plays are still performed, remaining an integral part of Spanish culture in modern-day America. It also advances an argument that traditional Spanish theater and culture influenced Shakespeare's plays, and compares some similarities such as Shakespeare's use of stock characters (like the black-hat villain, the nag, and the foolish braggart) with examples of each drawn from well-known Spanish works.
