- "This volume contains a simplified surname index, of deaths recorded in the 'Returns of Death' ledgers of the City of Charleston, SC [kept by] The City of Charleston Board of Health ... [and] the Medical Society [of South Carolina].... The full record of each death can be found on the microfilm of the ledgers in the South Carolina Room.... The information [presented in this index includes]: Last Name or name of slave holder, First Name or name of slave, Sex, Color, Condition (free or slave), Age, ... Date or Week of Death .... [N]ot reported to the Board of Health were almost all burials performed by St. Matthews Lutheran Church between 1841 and 1860. These records are included in a separate database at the end of the volume. The complete records of these deaths in the original German can be found on the microfilm in the South Carolina Room, where they are entered by date. In total this volume includes more than 55,000 entries, and it is the only index that includes slave deaths."--Introd.
