Ever wonder what happens to your flip-flops when they are discarded? This film examines the journey of the humble flip-flop in a small corner of Africa. Beginning in the factories of Mombasa, where 20 million pairs a year are made, many come to the small Swahili island of Lamu. Lamu cobblers specialize in flip-flop maintenance, while those too damaged to repair are washed into the ocean with the island's rubbish. That is how many come to the shores of Kiwaiyu Island, where islanders ingeniously carve life back into the tide's offerings, providing precious income for many families. The carvings go back to the shop-lined shores of Mombasa, where first their journey began.
