During the Middle Ages, the Christian pilgrims of Europe would seek grace by “Walking the Way of Saint James” to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, a legendary pilgrimage, to the resting place of Jesus’s disciple James the Greater, said to have been the son of Mary Magdalene. This so-called “walk” was well over 800 miles, requiring weeks and months of overnight rests in forested hostels, cities, monasteries and mountain villages along the ancient routes. The routes themselves cover picturesque roadways and paths dating to the 3rd Century. Little has changed, but greater exposure has meant more "pilgrims". This is not a trek for the fainthearted, but one that has become more popular than ever with our health conscious, experience-seeking 21st century, adventuresome world and its participants who love to trek, regardless of religious beliefs and fervor.
