After Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French artillery, is found guilty of trying to sell secrets to the enemy, the Army appoints a new Head of Counter-Intelligence, George Picquart, to revive public faith. Against the wishes of his superiors and in the face of public violence, Picquart re-opens the case when he discovers Dreyfus is innocent and the traitor still walks free, which results in enormous hardship for Picquart.
