Mr. Toda, a prominent Tokyo businessman, dies and leaves behind his wife and an unmarried daughter who are regarded as excess baggage by the eldest son and daughter who already have families of their own. The elderly mother and daughter live with the son and daughter's families for a while but are eventually told to leave and wind up living in a dilapidated cottage. On the anniversary of the father's death, the second son returns to Tokyo from Manchuria and is horrified at the treatment his mother and sister have received.
