An account of the biomedical research with nonhuman primates in Rijswijk and the successful action against it. The book describes the special story of the Rijswijk colony from the capture of the first animal out of Sierra Leone in 1964 to the decision, almost 40 years later, to give a pension to the apes, charged to the State. The decision took into consideration the value of the chimpanzees in the study of such diseases as malaria and AIDS jaundice, but the protests against the use of these particular test animals became louder and louder. By interviewing dozens of people concerned -- scientists, research workers, animal caretakers, activists, policy makers and politicians -- Meershoek gives a fascinating reconstruction of the fight, outside and inside the barrier, for the chimpanzees of the BPRC. The tale offers insight into the dilemma of deciding between the health of people and the well-being of animals.
