Shows the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat and describes its ecology, behavior, and social organization.

Schaller conducted an intensive year-long behavioral study of the mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) in its natural habitat in Central Africa, near the Virunga Mountains. Environment, behavioral characteristics, and social organization are covered in this piece. All gorilla footage shown is silent, with voice-over narration. Behaviors shown include display (chest-beating, branch slapping and plant throwing), juveniles at play, locomotion (knucklewalking, climbing), eating leaves and wild celery, nest building by juveniles. Age and sex characteristics of the gorillas is described. Also examined are home range and troop movement patterns, and dominance (showing displacement). The film ends with a contemplation of the future existence of the mountain gorilla.
