The Mammotrectus--"maternal milk" or source of "nourishment" for the clergy--was a manual composed during the 13th century by a Franciscan at Reggio, containing explanations of the grammatical constructs and the etymology of difficult terms of the Scriptures, as well as liturgical explanations of the festivals of the Church year and legends of the saints. The manual, arranged according to the books of the Bible, and the church year (with alphabetical index), was used by priests who sought clarification of the main Scriptural themes and a better overall understanding of the Bible for preparing their sermons.
