- In 1870 General William Jackson Palmer founded the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (DRG) with the intention of connecting Denver and Mexico City, but by the early twentieth century its most important route was between Denver and Salt Lake City. Beginning in 1903, speculators led by George Jay Gould used DRG money to finance the construction of the Western Pacific Railway, which extended the company's line to California. In 1915 the Western Pacific Railway defaulted on its interest payments, forcing it and the DRG into receivership. The Western Pacific Railway was reorganized into the Western Pacific Railroad Corporation in 1916, and the DRG emerged as the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1920.
