This paper examines the relationships between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the five founding nations within the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their implications to the United States. The paper will include an examination of the current security environment for the original five ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand; bilateral relationships of the individual countries with the U.S. and the PRC; the current bilateral relationships of the five original founding countries with the U.S. and PRC; and an assessment of the changes and their implications on the U.S. effort to achieve her strategic goals in the region as stated in the National Security Strategy.
