Summary

• This team jersey consisting of a short-sleeved shirt, pants or bloomers, and leggings was worn by a member of a Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company women’s softball team, probably around 1945. During World War II, Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company hired thousands of new workers, including several hundred women. Many of the women did office work, but others worked as welders, machinists, and painters in the company’s submarine building program and other defense projects. Some of the women played on a company-sponsored “girls’ softball team.” There were also bowling teams and other activities for the shipyard workers, both men and women. This jersey is royal blue with gold braid trim. On the back of the shirt is a submarine logo in gold trim over the company’s abbreviated name, “M.S.B. Co.” The leggings are black and white.
