Summary: This snapshot depicts the Police Department’s display booth in the Exposition and Armory Building at the Manitowoc County Fair in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, August 19-23, 1942. The police exhibit was one of two booths from which war bonds were sold at the 1942 fair. The large banner displayed on the brick wall at the back of the exhibit with the slogan "Conservation of Men & Materials in Time of War…Through Safety!" had been used previously at a regional safety conference that had been held in Manitowoc in May. Other elements of the exhibit, centered around signs and posters promoting war bonds and stamps, include displays of photographs, fingerprints, civil defense symbols, and "wanted posters." On two tables within the roped-off booth area are booklets and several pieces of equipment. In the far corner several men and boys view some of the exhibits; on the right, a man and woman stand looking down the length of one of the display tables. This snapshot is marked on the back, in ink: "Booth, County Fair / Aug. 19 ’42 / McConnell." The name probably refers to Edward J. McConnell, who is listed in the 1942 Manitowoc city directory as a traffic officer and member of the County Highway Commission.
