Visual display of the Coffee urn

Coffee urn

  • 1821
  • Made at the Salem pottery during Rudolph Christ’s tenure as master. The interior of this jar is coated with a clear lead glaze and the shoulder is decorated with incised concentric and wavy lines. The bottom is inscribed “Today we celebrate Lovefeast/ That you can tell by the good turnout/ When this urn is full of coffee/ How few here will be missed/ And when it is full, then I am right here/ And when it is empty then we will sing Hallelujah/ March 21 1821.”
