HE least interesting feature of the
exhibition is that each of several
thousand exquisite weaves can
be bought at half the prevailing
market rating. The story of the
way this came about would take us to the
banks of the Tigres River and even farther,
it would take us to the bazaars of Tiflis where
beauty struggles up amid the semi-squalid
confusion of a people who cling fast to the
essentials and vitalities of life, who scorn all
the arts of imitation and pay no hypocritical
homage to the god of cheap externalities.
Folks laugh at the East in all their thought-
lessness, deeming it especially ridiculous
that any people should attach a sacred sig-
nificance to certain rugs. As if beauty were
ever born of slap-dash and make-believe.
And the same folks wind up by marveling
at the rug into which these people have
woven their strange mysticism, their in-
comparable color instinct, their elaborate
sense of ornament, and above all their ex-
alted and unbending ideal of quality. Here
then, is the East, the immemorial East, and
in particular, Persia, revealed in rugs, whose
beauty and color-fusings, whose intrinsic
fineness and peculiar durability are a chal-
lenge to what Westerners so vauntingly call
civilization and progress. Not without a
certain diffidence do we write thus; for it is
just doubtful whether an event of such odd
