Built in the nine years after the completion of East Mebon, Pre Rup is the state temple of Rajendravarman II, and also the center of his royal city. Consecrated in 961, Pre Rup is the largest and most ambitious of Rajendravarman's three structures. Very similar in design to East Mebon, Pre Rup is laid out in a quincunx formation with the central tower surrounded by four lower towers. The central tower, dedicated to the Lord Rajendrabhadresvara, is a testament to Siva's manifestation as the mountain god. The four surrounding towers once contained images of Siva, Uma, and Vishnu. This photo is taken from the east from within the first of two enclosures that surround the complex. It is the last of the temples built in the Koh Ker period and the last example of a terraced pyramid built by the Khmers.
