A White Hmong girl poses seated inside her home in the White Hmong village of Phou Pha Deng (PC 4263) in Houa Khong Province. She is inspecting rice in a flat woven basket, removing any grains not fit to cook and any small stones. Behind her hanging on the wall are two bells usually tied around the necks of horses. Horses often have bells around their necks so they can easily be found when they wander away from the village. A large basket usually strapped on one's back to carry harvested items from the field or forest is seen to her side. The kerosene lamp is lit because she is inspecting the rice at night. She wears a traditional silver neck ring.
