HISTORY OF MANITOWOC COUNTY

and later took up the business of cheese making. He afterward turned his
attention to blacksmithing which he followed for three years in the employ
of
Charles Weiskopf of Kiel, after which he went to Adell, Wisconsin, and also
spent some time in Plymouth, working at his trade. In the year i900 he bought
a smithy at Hansonville and conducted it until i9o6 when he sold out and
made
a prospecting trip to the western coast. There he lived for one year after
which
he returned to Kiel and purchased the Gus Wimmer blacksmith shop, not only
the oldest establishment of this kind in Kiel but also in this section of
the state.
It was the first industry opened in the town and has been conducted continu-
ously since.
Mr. Henschel was married in I902 to Miss Katie Spranger, who was born
in Ryan township, Sheboygan county, in i882, a daughter of August and Sophia
(Schuelen) Spranger, who are now living at Kokomo, Indiana, where her father
carries on farming.
Mr. Henschel was reared in the Reformed church and holds membership in
the congregation of that denomination at Kiel. He is also connected with
the
Modern Woodmen of America there. He is interested in various measures
relating to public progress and improvement and his cooperation can be counted
upon to further projects for the general good, yet his time and attention
are
chiefly concentrated upon his business affairs.
JACOB ARNOLD.
Jacob Arnold, whose interests are centered in his excellent farm of one
hundred and twenty acres in the town of Kiel, was born in Manitowoc county,
January 8, 1859, and is a son of Philip and Mary Arnold. Philip Arnold was
born in Germany in I827, and came to the United States in I848, locating
in
Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, but later moved to Kiel, Manitowoc county, buy-
ing one hundred and twenty acres here in i857. This he operated until his
retirement. His wife was also born in Germany, but came to the United States
a short time prior to her marriage, which occurred in Manitowoc county about
i857. The children born to them were: Lena Katherina, now Mrs. Robert
Pagel, living on a farm in Manitowoc county; Jacob; Peter, a merchant of
Kiel; Philip, a farmer; and Christopher was an elevator owner but is now
living
retired in Kiel.
Jacob Arnold was educated in the public schools of Kiel, where he obtained
a good, substantial foundation for the knowledge that has come to him with
years and experience. He was with his father until I883, when he bought eighty
acres in the town of Kiel, later adding eighty acres more. Still later, he
sold
forty acres, and now owns one hundred and twenty acres, all of which is in
excellent condition, his buildings and premises showing that the one in charge
understands his work and takes a pride in having everything in first-class
repair.
On November 28, I883, Mr. Arnold was married to Anna Kazmeier, a daugh-
ter of Frederick and Louise (Ruckwied) Kazmeier, farming people. The par-
ents came from Germany in i854, and after eighteen months spent in New York
state, they located in Manitowoc county. They came to the United States sepa-
