And finally the Portage county chap-
ter joins the ever-increasing number of
Walton League units that believes a
home of their own is one of the im-
portant features of any live chapter.
Located high on a ridge overlooking the
swimming beach and the pheasant rear-
ing layout in Iverson Park, the new
Stevens Point home will serve a dual
purpose for in addition to being
available for the Waltonians, it will
be the head'quarters for the park
caretaker.
Like any well organized business and
like all active chapters of the Izaak
Walton League, Portage county chapter
is manned with live wire officers from
the president down through all the va-
rious committees which reflect the type
of leadership that makes for achieve-
ment. The present officers who direct
the destiny of Portage county chapter
are: President, Dr. A. R. Cook; vice-

Thirty-Day I

HIRTY consecutive days of shoot-
ing is the seasonal limit for the
     1937 waterfowl season as an-
nounced by the Secretary of Agriculture
following approval of regulations by
President Roosevelt on July 30. This
corresponds with the two previous sea-
sons and is in line with general expec-
tations of observers of the waterfowl
scene.
This year's regulations are the first to
give effect to the treaty with Mexico
completed last March for the protection
of migratory birds and game animals,
white-winged doves being one of the
species covered by this treaty.
         Seasons and Zones
In the northern zone the season on
 ducks, geese, Wilson's snipe (jack-
snipe), and coot opens October 9 and
closes November 7. During that pe-
riod waterfowl shooting in the follow-
 ing states will be legal:
   Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Maine,
 Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota,
 Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire,
New York (except Long Island), North
 Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota,
 Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Including the State of Oklahoma in the
northern zone is an attempt to give the
sportsmen of that state a fair chance
at the birds before they leave for the
 south.
November 1 to 30 are the open
dates for the intermediate zone, com-
 prised of:
   Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illi-
nois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ne-
vada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Long
Island of New York, Oregon, Pennsyl-
vania, Rhode Island, Utah, Washing-
ton, and West Virginia.

Protected Species

   This year's regulations represent t1A
continuance of a program designed
check the decline of waterfowl by t
only method over which man has absq
lute control-reducing the kill by fir(
arms. Waterfowl investigators of t
U. S. Biological Survey indicate an i
crease in the number of birds, exceptin
the deep diving ducks such as the rudd'
redheads and canvasbacks whose bree
ing range is more limited. The aim
to assure preservation of adequate breed
ing stocks to make the nationwide ref
uge program produce maximum results
and so long as there is any doubt abou
the status of the ducks, the Izaak Wal
ton League holds that the kill should 1,
restricted.
The new 1937 federal migratory wa
terfowl hunting stamps are now on sali
at the post offices, and every person over
16 years of age who hunts WATER-
FOWL, not coots, woodcock, rails,
doves, etc., is required to carry one of
these stamps, countersigned with his
or her name. Cost of each stamp iJ
$1.00, ninety per cent of the proceeds
from the sale going to the Biological
Survey for establishing and maintaining
migratory bird refuges, while ten per
cent goes to the. Postoffice Department
to pay the cost of handling the sale of
the stamps.
Whether or not you are a waterfowl
hunter BUY A 1937 DUCK STAMP,
thereby making a direct contribution to
WATERFOWL RESTORATION.
