Summary

• A Police Department photograph looking east down Michigan Avenue shows a Safe Way Motor Coach bus and a Chrysler Royal sedan that collided at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and North 18th Street in Manitowoc at 9:15 a.m. on November 29, 1944. The bus and automobile are side by side facing south in the intersection, which has a light covering of snow marked by numerous tire tracks. A uniformed police officer wearing a badge stands on the southwest curb facing the vehicles, while a man wearing a hat and smoking a pipe walks away from the rear of the vehicles. Bare trees lightly covered with snow line both sides of Michigan Avenue. In the open space on the right on the far side of the intersection are the grounds of the Manitowoc County Normal School at 1701 N. Michigan Avenue. The officer on the curb is probably traffic officer Frank Orchekowski, who is identified on a police data card affixed to the back of the photograph as one of two policemen who took measurements of the accident for evidence, with the other being the photographer. Safe Way was one of several bus companies that operated in Manitowoc during the 1940s. Safe Way was the "city bus" line.
