Summary

• Dish decorated by Lulu Devereaux Dixon for the Pauline Pottery, Edgerton, 1888-1892. Molded cream-colored earthenware dish or dresser tray. Dragon shapes in relief, with openwork tails, at each corner. Interior hand-painted with dragon over crossed spears in yellow, green and red underglaze outlined in black. Gilded edges. One end airbrushed in pink, the other airbrushed in blue-green underglaze. Exterior airbrushed with light green underglaze.

• This dish may have been decorated by Lulu Blanche Devereaux Dixon (1866-1947), the mother of donor Evelyn Dixon Huggins. According to the records of the Wisconsin Historical Society, Dixon was a designer and decorator for the Pauline Pottery from 1888-1892. She was born January 31, 1866 in Union, Rock County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward Devereaux and Eva W. Whaley. Around 1888 she married Albert E. Dixon (1862-1909), a butter maker in Evansville, Wisconsin. At some point between 1920 and 1930 Dixon moved to San Diego, California with her daughter Evelyn. She died May 4, 1947 in Los Angeles.
