Summary

• A wooden box measuring 15½” x 5” x 5½” contains the broken champagne bottle that was used to christen the submarine U.S.S. “Guavina” (SS 362) when she was launched on August 29, 1943 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The box’s wooden cover is shown next to the box. The bottle is enclosed in a decorative casing of red, white and blue fabric and ribbons which had been made by Mrs. Charles Schaefer of Manitowoc. The “Guavina” was one of twenty-eight submarines built in Manitowoc by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for the U.S. Navy during World War II.
