Dr. Waisman urges that the law be modified to specify the appropriate
period within which the test should be performed. "The best medical supervision
requires that the child be tested again at the end of the second and at the fourth
week of age" when it is usually much easier for the doctor to detect the disease.
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has made a
grant of $176,000 to the research team, and proposes an increase in the award to
$588,705 later.
