228 COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE

SPANISH House. The Casa Cervantes, at 251 Langdon Street, close to
Lake Mendota and the campus, has been maintained since 1925 by the De-
partment for the purpose of providing, under pleasant social conditions,
intensive training in speaking Spanish and a better understanding of the
life, art, and literature of Spain and the Spanish-American countries. It is
open to women students for room and board, and both men and women liv-
ing outside are welcome for regular board or a certain number of meals.
The Casa has a thoroughly Spanish atmosphere; it possesses a Spanish li-
brary, a piano, and a large collection of Spanish music. Spanish is the only
language permitted at the tables and during the social hours. Women of
Spanish birth reside at the Casa, and there come regularly for meals the
instructional force of the Department, which includes several Spanish-
speaking people, and also the Spanish-American students in attendance at
the University. With approval of the departmental faculty, a part of the
prescribed training in conversation necessary for the teachers’ certificate
may be done in the Casa. The Casa is not a commercial enterprise and is
run at moderate prices. Requests for further information and applications
for room and board for both the summer session and the regular year,
should be addressed, well in advance, to the Chairman, Department of
Spanish and Portuguese.

SPANISH CLUB. The Club Cervantes, managed by the students with
the co-operation of the Faculty, meets every other week during the year and
presents interesting programs consisting of short lectures in Spanish by
members of the Faculty or advanced students conversant with the Spanish
countries, Spanish songs, games, musicals, dramatic sketches, recitations,
picnics, and other social entertainments. Each semester a Spanish play is
staged, thus affording an opportunity to the students of participating in
important Spanish dramatics.
