THE B.A. GENERAL COURSE 59

In general, students are required to take a minimum of 8 credits in
one foreign language in the University. Any student, however, who pre-
sents more than six units for entrance will be allowed to count the addi-
tional unit or units toward the total requirement of 32 credits, provided he
passes a special examination given thereon by the college. This examina-
tion will normally be given before the Christmas holidays in the first semes-
ter of the student’s freshman year. Eight credits is the least amount
of a foreign language which will be accepted toward the foreign-language
requirement of any course, and if two or three languages are presented
at least 16 credits must be in one language. Students choosing a foreign-
language major must present a second foreign language.

(c) Two of the following: natural science, 10 credits, in a continuous
year course; mathematics, 8 credits; history, 6 credits, in a continuous
year course. A student is not permitted to repeat in college, for credit,
the equivalent of a course in mathematics which he has had in high school.

Under natural science are included botany, zoology, biology (a com-
bined course made up of a semester of botany and a semester of zoology),
chemistry, physics, geography, and geology. All are courses of five credits
per semester for two semesters, with laboratory work, or field work in
geography and geology.

(d) Major study, thesis, and electives. See sections 14 and 15 above.

19. STUDIES OF THE FRESHMAN YEAR

In this year only one subject is definitely required, English 1, fresh-

make up a program of 14, 15, or 16 credits for the semester, are to be
chosen from the groups listed below, composed of subjects which extend
for two semesters, unless otherwise indicated. The combination may be
made by adding to English two foreign languages from Group I, with one -
subject from Group II; or by taking but one foreign language with two
subjects from Group II.

Group I. FOREIGN LANGUAGE. At least one subject must be chosen
from this group, but not more than 5 credits per semester may be taken in
any single subject. Students may not take for credit courses which are
equivalent to those completed in high scheol. Advanced courses in language
are open to students of suitable preparation,

French 1, 10, 18, 15, 16, 20—8 to 5 credits per semester

German 1, 2, 3—4 credits per semester
