COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE 303

FARMERS’ INSTITUTES

The Department of Farmers’ Institutes of the College of Agriculture
is maintained by a legislative provision which appropriates $30,000 annu-
ally for the purpose of conducting Farmers’ Institutes at various places
throughout the state. In the year July 1, 1928 to July 1, 1929, 574 two-
day and one-day institutes and single session meetings were held. The
Department also held 95 special farmers’ co-operative marketing institutes,
with consideration of such commodities as American cheese, foreign cheese,
butter, and eggs.

Persons desiring institutes in their communities should write to E. L.
Luther, Superintendent, for application blanks and other information,

ORGANIZATIONS

Several societies maintained by the agricultural students meet fre-
quently to discuss questions related to their special interest. These organi-
zations are for drill in parliamentary practice and training in debate, as
well as for the discussion of scientific and practical questions. The Eu-
thenics Club is an organization of students in Home Economics to promote
intellectual and social intercourse and stimulate greater interest in vital
problems of the day. The Saddle and Sirloin Club is a student organiza-
tion of those interested in animal husbandry; the Grafter’s Club for those
interested in horticulture; and the Apis Club for students of entomology.

An Agricultural Experiment Association with a paid membership of
about 1,000 is maintained for the purpose of co-operating with the College
and Experiment Station in advancing the agriculture of the commonwealth.
By means of this organization, the members of which are located in all
sections of the state, the College is in close touch with the great body of
Wisconsin farmers.

A chapter of the national honorary agricultural fraternity, Alpha Zeta,
and a chapter of the national honorary home economics sorority, Omicron
Nu, are maintained by faculty and student members. The students publish
a monthly magazine, The Country Magazine, under the direction of the
Department of Agricultural Journalism.
