if they have had or are taking one of these courses for full credit, another
may be taken from this group for two credits a semester only, omitting
the supplementary reading and a topical report. Students not registered
in the College of Letters and Science may take any of the introductory
courses for two credits each semester. Course 349 is primarily for students
who expect to teach history in a secondary school. Students are advised
not to neglect advanced work in an attempt to cover ali of the introductory
courses. (b) Courses numbered in the 100 series continue in the direction
of greater specialization the work begun in the introductory courses; they
may be elected by students who have the necessary preparation. (c) Courses
numbered above 200 are open only to graduate students.

Honors IN History. Honors in history are awarded upon special
examination at the close of the senior year to students who have been
accepted as candidates after taking the Admittance-to-Honors examination
at the beginning of the junior year. The special studies of these students
may be pursued, after agreement with the major professor, in regular
courses or in History 180. For further details the department should be
consulted.

MAJsor. Not less than 32 nor more than 40 credits in history to in-
clude: 6 credits in one of the freshman courses, History 1, 5, or 10; 6
credits in History 4; at least 16 credits in advanced courses at Wisconsin,
of which, for upper-group students (see p. 56), 4 shall be devoted to a thesis.
Outside the department, Economics 1a and Political Science 1 are required,
and Geography 4 is recommended.
