For students who have a good command of German grammar and
wish to achieve fluency and ease in the writing of German. Strongly
recommended to teaching candidates working for an M.A. degree.

75. GERMAN CLASSICS IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION (Comp. Lit. 75). Yr;
2 cr. A study of selected masterpieces of German literature, taken
up entirely in English. Not open to freshmen. Lectures, assigned
reading, discussions, and topics. The first semester begins with the
Nibelungenlied and ends with Schiller; the second semester begins
with Goethe and comes down to modern times. Not offered 1930-31.

111. GERMANY AND HER INSTITUTIONS. II; 2 cr. Lectures in English;
collateral reading (in German for graduate credit). Especially rec-
ommended to those who wish to prepare themselves as teachers of
German. The geography and history of Germany; political organi-
zation, educational system, and cultural development of modern Ger-

1 or 2 cr. For students with advanced training in French, German,

Required of all candidates for the University Teachers’ Certificate.
-Includes practice teaching in the Wisconsin High School. Lectures,
discussions, observations, and reports. No language credit. Gradu-
ate credit only by special arrangement. 2:30 MW. Mr. Griebsch.

GERMAN LITERATURE—GROUP A

These courses are intended primarily for students who have had Ger-
man 2b or its equivalent. Students having more than four credits in ad-
vance of German 2b will be required to do additional work to receive full
credit, and not more than two courses in this group may regularly be taken
for credit.

To make suitable four- or five-hour combinations, 14, 15, 18, or 20 may
be combined with 40 or 41.

3. SELECTED MASTERPIECES. II; 4 cr. Prerequisite: German 2b, or
four years of high-school German. Reading, grammar, composition,
conversation. Reading includes Sudermann, Frau Sorge, and Goethe,
Hermann und Dorothea. 8 MWFS.
