LATIN

ELEMENTARY LATIN. I, II; 5 er. The elements of the language,
including forms and syntax, with simple translation into Latin and
English, equivalent to a full year of high-school work, and prepara-
tory to reading Caesar in the second semester. First semester (four
sections): 8 and 10 MTWTS; 11 and 2:30 MTWTF. Second semes-
ter: 8 MTWTF.

CAESAR. I, II; 5 cr. The equivalent of the second year of high-
school Latin. The reading of selections from the seven books of the
Gallic War. Composition once a week. Prerequisite: Latin 1 or
one year of high-school Latin. First semester: 9 MTWTF. Second
semester (four sections): 8 and 10 MTWTS; 11 and 2:30 MTWTF.

Cicero. I, II; 4 or 5 cr. Four of the shorter orations, or an equiva-
lent amount selected from the orations and letters. Composition one
day a week for those who take the course for five credits. Pre-
requisite: Latin 2 or two years of high-school Latin. First semes-
ter: 10 M—F. Second semester: 9 M—F.

Vircit. I, II; 4 or 5 cr. The parts read are taken from the first
six books of the Aeneid. As in Latin 3, one day a week is given to
composition for those who take the course for five credits. Pre-
requisite: Latin 3 or three years of high-school Latin. First semes-
ter: 2:30 M—F. Second semester: 10 M—F.

SALLUST. II; 4 cr. This course follows immediately upon Latin 4,
and at the same hour. It is given in the second semester to enable
students who graduate from high school in the middle of the year
to continue their Latin study at once. The reading consists of the
Jugurthine War, with composition once a week. Prerequisite: Latin
4 or four years of. high-school Latin. 2:30 MTTF. Mr. Bennett.

Ovip, Livy, Cicero. Yr; 4 cr. In the first semester, selections from
Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Livy, Book I; in the second, selections
from Livy, Books XXI and XXII, and Cicero’s De Senectute or se-
lected Letters. A systematic course in composition continues, once a
week, through the year. Prerequisite: Latin 4 or four years of
high-school Latin. Three sections: one at 11 MTTF, Mr. Schlicher;
two at 2:30 MTTF, Mr. Winspear, Mr. Bennett.

HORACE AND POETRY SuRVEY. Yr; 3 or 4 cr. In the first semester,
the Odes; in the second, select Satires and Epistles, and a general
survey of Latin poetry. The fourth hour will be devoted to Latin
composition. Students with a grade of A or B in composition may
substitute all of Latin 7 for the first semester of Latin 107. Pre-
requisite: Latin 6. Two sections, 8 MWF. Mr. Showerman, Mr.

Winspear.

SigHT READING. Yr; 1 cr. A considerable amount of Latin from
Cicero and other authors will be read in class to increase the stu-
dent’s ability to take in the thought of the sentence as he moves
through it. Translation is resorted to only when necessary. Pre-
requisite: Latin 6. 1:30 TT. Mr. Schlicher.
