COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE 61

V. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PH.B.
GENERAL COURSE

21. OUTLINE OF CURRICULUM

All the studies prescribed below are to be taken in college:

(a) English, 10 credits of freshman and sophomore composition (Eng-
lish 1 and 2) for students who do not carry foreign language successfully
throughout the freshman year; 6 credits of freshman composition for those
who do carry foreign language successfully throughout the freshman year.

(b) Science and mathematics: A total of 20 credits to be taken in
year courses; e. g., 8 credits in mathematics and 12 in science, or 10 cred-
its in mathematics and 10 in science, or 20 in mathematics, or 20 in science.
Only the laboratory sciences as approved for the B.A. course will be
accepted as meeting this requirement.

(c) Two of the following groups:

1. Philosophy and psychology; or mathematics—10 credits in one
of the two. Mathematics may not be offered both here and
under (b) above.

2. History, 10 credits, to be taken in year courses. Courses in the
“hundred” group may be credited by semesters.

3. Foreign language, 14 credits, not more than 8 of which may be
in a beginner’s course.

(d) Major study, thesis, and electives. See sections 14 and 15 above.

22. STUDIES OF THE FRESHMAN YEAR

The same subjects are open to freshmen in this course as in the B.A.
course, and on the same terms. (See section 19.) Students may readily
make the following combinations, in which the numbers represent the num-
ber of credits per semester. Other combinations are feasible.

(a) Without foreign language.

English 3 credits, history 3 or 5, science 5, drawing 3.
English 3 credits, science 5, mathematics 4, history 3.
English 3 credits, science 10, history 38.

English 3 credits, science 5, history 3 or 5, drawing 3.

(b) With foreign language.

English 3 credits, language 4 or 5, history 3, science 5.
English 3 credits, language 4, history 3 or 5, mathematics 4.
English 3 credits, language 4, science 5, mathematics 4.
English 3 credits, language 4 or 5, mathematics 5, history 3.

Students who may elect as indicated in (b) will be in line, if they so
choose, to go on toward the B.A. degree instead of the Ph.B. They may
continue foreign language in the sophomore year and offer it as part of
the prescribed credits for the Ph.B. degree, or the study may be discontinued
at the end of the freshman year. In the latter case the student will need
to offer 10 credits in philosophy and psychology or in mathematics, and
10 in history. Students may elect two foreign languages, but such students
will ordinarily enter the B.A. course.

23. STUDIES OF THE SOPHOMORE YEAR

In the sophomore year the students in this course must complete the
specified requirements so far as the printed schedule permits.
