CLuss. French and Italian clubs at the University afford students
opportunity to hear talks about the country whose language they are study-
ing,-to participate in short plays and games, and to converse in the lan-
guage in which they are interested. Modern and classical plays are pre-
sented in public from time to time.

FIRST-SEMESTER FRENCH. I, II; 4 er. For students who have had

SECOND-SEMESTER FRENCH. I, II; 4 cr. Prerequisite: French la
or one year of high-school French. 6 sections I; 19 sections II. Based
on an examination, or their previous record of B or above, the better
students are assigned to special sections. Mr. Cheydleur and staff.

THIRD-SEMESTER FRENCH. I, II; 3 cr. Largely a reading course.
Prerequisite: French 1b or two years of high-school French. 20 sec-
tions I; 6 sections II. Based on an examination, or a previous
record of B or above, the better students are assigned to special sec-

FOURTH-SEMESTER FRENCH. I, II; 3 cr. Largely a reading course.
Prerequisite: French 10a or three years of high-school French. 7
sections I; 18 sections II. Based on an examination, or a pre-
vious record of B or above, the better students are assigned to special
sections. Mr. Bradley and staff.

RAPID READING. Yr; 1 cr. Emphasis on sight translation; contem-
porary prose. To be taken only with French 10a or 10b; not open to
students with two years of college French (except by special permis-
sion). Does not count toward French teaching major or minor. 6
sections. Mr. Bradley and staff.

ELEMENTARY COMPOSITION AND CONVERSATION. Yr; 2 cr. Review of
grammatical principles with oral and written exercises. Supplemen-
tary course to be taken with French 10a and 10b. Not open to stu-
dents who have had the equivalent of two years of college French,
except by special permission. 8 sections. Mr. Bradley and staff.

INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION. Yr; 2 cr. Pre-
requisite: Grade of at least C in 10b cr in 15b. 8 sections. Miss
Gay and staff.

FRANCE OF TODAY. Yr; 2 cr. Reading and discussion of books,
newspapers, and periodicals. Open only to students in journalism
and commerce, except by special permission. Prerequisite: French
10b and sophomore standing. 8 TT. Mr. Harris.

THIRD-YEAR READING. Yr; 3 cr. Mainly a reading and translation
course. Prerequisite: French 10b or four years of high-school
French. Not open to those whose grade in French 10b was B or
above; such students take French 21. If the results of an examina-
tion warrant, students who have had their preparation elsewhere
may be transferred to French 21. 7 sections. Mr. Caddock, Mr.
