COURSE IN APPLIED ARTS

LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE, APPLIED ARTS COURSE
W. H. VARNUM, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF APPLIED ARTS, in Charge

PURPOSE AND PLAN. The studies included in the Course in Applied
Arts are of three types: (1) those designed to familiarize the student with
basic and advanced art practice, art appreciation, art curriculum building
and teaching practice, leading to the development of teachers and super-
visors of art (drawing, painting, design, and art-crafts) in public or private
schools, normal schools, and colleges; (2) those courses intended to equip
the student for commercial or professional art activities, and (8) art courses
primarily for students who desire an appreciative knowledge of art practice
through participating in its theory and practice.

REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING Group. A total of 124 credits and 124
grade-points is required for graduation from this course. Of this number,
47 to 62 credits (exclusive of 6 credits in Applied Arts 1, and Applied Arts
50-51) must be taken in departmental courses in accordance with the op-
tions indicated below. If history is chosen it must be in year courses; if
foreign language is chosen it must be in a continuous course in one language
throughout the four semesters. The sophomore English course elected in
the first semester must be continued in the second semester. The science or
mathematics elected in the first semester of the freshman year must be
continued throughout the year.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL ART OR COMMERCIAL ART GROUPS.
Students who desire to specialize in a division of professional art, such as
figure drawing or landscape painting, illustrating, lithography, advertising,
fashion drawing, etc., will meet the departmental and university require-
ments as presented for the freshman and sophomore years of the art
teacher-training course.

In the junior year, Applied Arts 68, a course intended to aid in the
selection of a major art occupation, is required of all students majoring in
professional art. Preferably this selection is made by the end of the first
semester, while in the second semester (a period of specialized training) the
student, by electing departmental courses, in every way increases his pro-
fessional efficiency in the selected pursuit. Neither Applied Arts 18 nor 57
is required of professional (non-teaching) students.

For students with sufficient preparation, Applied Arts 124, an on-and-
off-campus coordination training, may be taken in the junior year by per-
mission of the adviser. Ordinarily this course is elected in the first semester
of the senior year.

Other required junior and senior courses are Applied Arts 100, the
senior thesis, and for the first semester of the senior year, Applied Arts 91
(a substitute for Applied Arts 306) and 130, a pro-seminary of art in in-
dustry in the second semester. Departmental electives for the senior year
should be based upon the student’s major interest in professional art. A
total of 124 credits is required for graduation.
