BUREAU OF DRAMATIC ACTIVITIES
ETHEL THEODORA ROCKWELL, B.A., CHIEF

In response to a growing demand for assistance in the selection and
staging of plays and pageant-dramas in the schools, churches, and communi-
ties of the state, the Bureau of Dramatic Activities was organized in 1927
as a cooperative agency of the Extension Division and the Department of
Speech. In its functions the drama work of the former Bureau of Com-
munity Drama and Music of the Extension Division is resumed and ex-
panded.

Correspondence on all questions relating to the arrangement and pre-
sentation of local-talent productions is invited. Specifically, the Bureau is
prepared to render to schools, churches, clubs, and communities of the state,
upon request, the following services:

PLAY DirecTiInG. As far as time permits, a representative of the
Bureau will visit communities in the state to direct the actual staging of
plays in all necessary details.

PAGEANT WRITING AND DIRECTING. Advice and local assistance will be
rendered to communities contemplating the presentation of commemorative,
historical, patriotic, or civic pageants.

ASSISTANCE IN CONDUCTING OR ORGANIZING COMMUNITY CHAUTAUQUAS
OR PROGRAMS FOR FAIRS.

LENDING DRAMATIC MATERIAL. The Bureau has built up an extensive
library of plays—long and short, modern and classical—suitable for chil-
dren, high-school students, college students, and adult groups. Upon re-
quest a selection of books will be sent free of charge for examination.

ORIGINAL PLAY-WRITING. The Bureau desires to encourage the writ-
ing of original plays and will assist in conducting tournaments in play-
writing in the schools and communities of the state.

ANNUAL DRAMATIC INSTITUTE. This institute, held the first two weeks
of the regular summer session, gives intensive courses in play production,
play writing, stage-craft design, pantomime, costume design, make-up, voice
training, and children’s dramatics. A small registration fee is charged.
