ROMAN SATIRE. I; 3 cr. Selected satires of Horace, Persius, and
Juvenal. Study of satire as a literary genre. Lectures and assigned
reading on the social conditions at Rome in the time of the Empire.
Prerequisite: Latin 7. 11 MWF. Mr. Bennett.

Tacitus. II; 8 cr. Either the principate of Tiberius or the reign
of Nero is studied by lectures, recitations, and reports. The ethical
and literary ideals of Tacitus and his treatment of social, political,
and economic movements will be considered. (In 1929-80, the prin-
cipate of Tiberius.) Prerequisite: Latin 7. Offered 1929-30 and in

HISTORIANS OF THE REPUBLIC. I; 3 cr. Selections from Livy, Sal-
lust, and Caesar’s Civil War. Study of Roman senatorial govern-
ment and its overthrow. Prerequisite: Latin 7. Offered 1929-30

LATIN SOUNDS AND Forms. Yr; 2 cr. Lectures on the history of
Latin sounds and forms and their relation to those of other languages,
supplemented by reports and class discussion. Offered 1929-30 and
in alternate years. Mr. Laird.

PROBLEMS IN LATIN SYNTAX. Yr; 1 cr. Introduction to the study of
syntax and investigation of specific problems of case, mood, tense,
and word order. Open to seniors who wish to do their thesis work in

‘this field. Offered 1929-30 and in alternate years. Mr. Schlicher.

ROMAN INSCRIPTIONS AND COINS. Yr; 2 cr. Instruction and prac-
tice in the reading of inscriptions, primarily to put the student in
contact with the abundant material offered by the Corpus and Roman
coins for a study of Roman history, religion, and public and private
life. About 1,000 coins are available for study. Offered 1929-30
and in alternate years. Mr. Schlicher.

LITERATURE OF THE LATE EMPIRE. I; 3 cr. A survey of the two
literatures, Pagan and Christian, from the early second century to
the fall of Rome. Special studies of Minucius Felix and Apuleius.
Offered 1929-30 and in alternate years. Mr. Showerman.

LATIN LITERATURE. Yr; 3 cr. Lectures and assigned readings. A
minute examination of the authors read. Not offered 1930-31.

LATIN SEMINARY. Yr; 2 cr. The work varies from year to year,
according to the author or subject taken up. All seminaries, how-
ever, deal with the principles of textual criticism, as well as with
literary, rhetorical, and historical interpretation. In 1930-31 the sub-
ject will be Problems of Roman History, with Mr. Bennett in charge;
in 1931-82 the work will be in Tacitus, under direction of Mr. Win-
