RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION

ENGLISH COMPOSITION. Three hours a week; no credit. For students
who have failed to pass the preliminary test.

FRESHMAN ENGLISH. I, II; 3 er. Required of freshmen in all col-
leges. Mr. Taylor and staff.

FRESHMAN ENGLISH. I, II; 3 er. Continuation of English la. Re-
quired of all freshmen excepting those who receive a grade of A in
English la. On the completion of this course, a provisional pass
mark is given; if subsequently a student is reported deficient or care-
less in English composition, he may be required to take additional
work in that subject. Mr. Taylor and staff.

SOPHOMORE COMPOSITION. I, II; 2 cr. Prerequisites: English 1b,
2a, exposition; 2b, description and narration. 8, 9, 10, 11, or 1:30 TT.
Mr. Freeman and staff.

JUNIOR COMPOSITION. Yr; 2 cr. Prerequisite: Consent of in-
structor:. 10 JE, Mass, Witte,

ADVANCED COMPOSITION. Yr; 3 cr. Prerequisite: Junior standing.
Not offered 1930-31. Mr. Dodge.

NARRATIVE COMPOSITION. Yr; 2 cr. Prerequisites: Junior standing
and consent of instructor. 10 TT. Mr. Fulcher.

CRITICAL WRITING. Yr; 2 cr. Each member of the class takes up a
particular author or topic as the center of his writing for the semes-
ter. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. 11 TT. First semester,
Mr. Clark; second semester, Miss Thornbury.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

ENGLISH Worps. II; 3 cr. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Can
be taken for only partial credit by a student who has taken English
123. 10 MWF. Mr. Hanley.

SURVEY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. Yr; 8 cr. This course, the mate-
ial in which is arranged in historical sequence, is designed for stu-
dents who have a special interest in the study of literature, and is
recommended to sophomores who contemplate making English their
major subject. Either this course or course 33 must be taken as a
prerequisite for all advanced courses in English literature. A stu-
dent who has a semester’s credit in course 33 may not elect either
semester of course 30. 8, 10, 11, or 2:30 MWF, or 8 TT, 9 F. (First
semester’s work repeated in second semester, and second semester’s
work given during first semester, 2:30 TTF.) Mr. Pyre and staff.
