COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE 67

Vl. CHEMISTRY-COMMERCE COURSE

J. H. MATHEWS, DIRECTOR, PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY

The need for such a course arises from the fact that men of affairs
in the industrial world are often handicapped because they do not possess
a fundamental knowledge of the technical principles involved in their
business. This course is intended particularly for students who desire to
fit themselves to hold commercial positions such as business managers,
technical secretaries, managerial secretaries, sales managers, purchasing
agents, technical salesmen, and in fact any commercial position in which a
thorough understanding of fundamental chemical principles would be an
asset.

REQUIREMENTS. 130 credits are required for graduation, of which not
more than 14 may be in the starred courses in economics, nor more than
40 in any single department. Students with fifty per cent more grade-
points than credits at the close of the junior year will write a thesis in
chemical industry in the senior year; others will take a course in chemistry
prescribed by the Chemistry Department.

The requirement in foreign language is 24 credits in French, German,
or Spanish, of which at least 16 must be in one language and at least
8 more in the same or a second language. Students who present for en-
trance less than two units in one foreign language will be required to
continue the study of foreign language in the junior year in place of some
of the optional and elective work.
