with higher recoveries than are now possible. The constitution and physi-
cal properties of iron blast furnace slags is being studied. A grant from
the Engineering Foundation is facilitating progress in this work. With the
assistance of different groups of founderies in Wisconsin, research on the
properties of gray cast iron, the reactions of steel-making, and the manu-
facture of pearlitic iron is being instituted. From time to time the depart-
ment cooperates with individual enterprises in studies of the special prob-
lems which their work develops.
