First-SEMESTER GERMAN. I, II; 4 cr. Text: Prokosch and Mor-
gan, Introduction to German, lessons I-XXII. Pronunciation, gram-
mar foundation, practice in writing (German script) and speaking.

SECOND-SEMESTER GERMAN. I, II; 4 cr. Introduction to German
completed; Storm, Immensee (Heath); supplementary reading, about
50 pages. Grammar study continued, further practice in writing and
speaking, extensive reading begun, systematic work in translation.
Prerequisite: German la, or one year of high-school German.

THIRD-SEMESTER GERMAN. I, II; 4 cr. Purin—Rose, Deutsche Kul-
turkunde (Johnson); additional reading, largely fiction, about 100
pages. Grammar review and drill, oral practice, and written work.
Prerequisite: German 1b, or two years of high-school German.

FoURTH-SEMESTER GERMAN. I, II; 4 cr. Leskien, Schuld (Oxford),
Schiller, Wilhelm Tell (or other verse drama), supplementary read-
ing. Procedure in general as in German 2a. Prerequisite: German
2a, or equivalent.

BEGINNING GERMAN FOR GRADUATES. Yr; two hours per week; no
credit. Leads up to German 16.

ADVANCED PRACTICE COURSES

COMPOSITION AND CONVERSATION. Yr; 2 er. Prerequisite: Four
credits in advance of German 2b, or a grade of B in German 2b.
Required of all teaching majors and minors, unless German 112 is
substituted. Formal written exercises and grammar review, with
discussion in German. 8 TT. Mr. Bruns, Mr. Schreiber.

GERMANY OF TopAy. Yr; 2 cr. Reading and discussion of books,
newspapers, and periodicals. Primarily for students in journalism
and commerce. Prerequisite: German 2b or equivalent. 9 TT. Mr.
Appelt.

Prose READING FoR GRADUATES. Yr; two hours per week; no credit.
For students preparing to secure the certificate of reading knowl-
edge. Prerequisite: Two years of college German or equivalent.

SCIENTIFIC GERMAN. Yr; 2 cr. Translation course for students
specializing in science. Especially desirable for students of medicine
and chemistry. Prerequisite: German 2b or equivalent. Mr. E. A.
Morgan.

ELEMENTARY CONVERSATION. Yr; 1 cr. Prerequisite: German 2b
or equivalent. Class discussion in German of simple topics, anecdotes,
poems, pictures, etc. 10 TT. Miss Kittel.

INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION. Yr; 1 cr. Prerequisite: Four cred-
its in advance of German 2b, or sufficient ability in speaking German.
Similar to German 40, but somewhat more advanced. 10 TT. Mr.
Schreiber.
