- Like the mitochondrion, plastids have two unit membranes. Unlike mitochondria, the obvious set of membranes seen inside the organelle are not derived from the inner membrane. These thallakoid membranes are homologous to those found in the cyanobacteria. Complexes of pigments making up the photosystems are embedded in these membranes.
