The squirrel trapping and marking project at Bastrop State Park is progressing

remarkable well. Since instigation of the project on May 16, with 19 traps,
17 dif-
ferent squirrels (9 males and 8 females) have been trapped 64 times. One
animal has
been trapped 10 different times. Because tags are not available the animals
are
marked by ear clipse Ears are clipped without any apparent deleterious effect.

Three animals experimentally tagged with small aluminum tags have been recaptured

several times. Results obtained thus far indicate the feasibility of using
tags.
Valuable infrmation is being secured on the movements, home range, and population

of squirrels through trapping operations.
Aside from squirrels, several othet animals have been captured in the traps,

notably opossums. Five opossums have been captured 10 times. Cardinals and
wood-
rats have been captured also.

P---s and corn are beina used as bait; pecans are apparently the best bait.
