Summary

• This small snapshot shows a portion of the crowd of some 1,500 people who gathered at the Lincoln High School Bowl in Manitowoc on Sunday, May 13, 1945 for "Sunday V-E Day" services marking the end of World War II in Europe. The actual date of V-E Day was Tuesday, May 8. The photograph is taken from the southwest side of the "Bowl", with a portion of the west facade of Lincoln High School visible in the background. Also visible behind a tree at the left side of the picture is the school flag pole with the American flag at half mast in memory of President Roosevelt, who had died on April 12. In the immediate foreground, seen from the back, are servicemen in uniform facing a low stage platform upon which the Manitowoc Marine Band and the Two Rivers Meistersingers Guild chorus appear, along with program speakers and other dignitaries. Ceremony participants included the Boy Scouts, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the State Guard, and the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce. Clergymen who spoke were Rev. Noah Bess, Rabbi David Shapiro, and Rev. L. M. Schorn.
