Summary

• Broadside view of the U.S.S. Guitarro (SS 363) on the launching ways at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin just prior to being launched on September 26, 1943. Her bow is draped with bunting, and pennants fly from a cable strung the length of the boat. Shipyard workers can be seen on deck and among the launching timbers which project from beneath the submarine. The Guitarro was one of twenty-eight submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for the United States Navy during World War II. All of the submarines were positioned like this, to be side-launched into the Manitowoc River. From this vantage point, the submarine on launching timbers is reminiscent of an ancient oar-propelled warship.
