Summary

• This police evidence photograph taken November 12, 1942 looks west from the new municipal athletic field south of Washington Junior High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In the foreground, lying on its side, is a safe that had been stolen from the Manitowoc Guernsey Dairy the previous night. Beyond the safe, pointed east facing the camera, is a parked car—possibly a police vehicle—in which a driver wearing a hat can be seen, and beyond the car is South Twenty-Third Street, running north and south. In 1942 the two houses, 1806 and 1808 South Twenty-Third, were the only houses on that street in the "block" between Division Street and the Chicago and North Western railroad tracks. Grand Avenue, which today intersects with South Twenty-Third, did not exist at that time. According to a newspaper account, burglars had hauled the 450 to 500 pound safe "to the darkened regions on the far south side" and smashed the door, but made away with only $10.
