The Ummayad Caliph 'Abd al-Rahman III (reg 912-961) built his palace, the Dar al-Imara, in 913-914 over a destroyed early Christian basilica. The complex was expanded in the eleventh and twelfth centuries and named the Alcázar al-Mubarak, or El Bendito. The palace was rebuilt after the Reconquista, particularly under Pedro I (reg 1350-1369) beginning in 1364.
