• This is a photo of a plaque at Monterey Rock, placed under the auspices of the Rock County Historical Society, directing visitors to a view across Rock River to the site where Janesville's first white settlers -- Joshua and William Holmes, John Inman, and George Fallmer -- built the first log cabin in Rock County. Originally, Monterey Rock (also known as Big Rock) stood 70 feet high and was crowned with cedar trees. It was a landmark for the Indians and the first settlers from the East who forded the Rock River at this point. Since the damming of the Rock River, the rock does not appear quite as big as it once did.
